A wide-ranging musician returns to one of the central gems of the cellist’s treasure store in the shape of Bach’s unaccompanied suites – works whose (in his words) ‘transcendental beauty and enchanting simplicity’ he has brought together in his much admired recording, which The Sunday Times described as ‘one of the most spontaneous-sounding sets on disc’. Believed to date from 1717-23, the period when Bach was employed as Kapellmeister to the court at Köthen, the cello suites remained little known until taken up by Pablo Casals but have subsequently become amongst the most beloved of the composer’s instrumental works.
