A statement from German Ambassador Andreas Michaelis

Tue 14 Sep 2021

We are delighted and proud to be supporting the special German Concert Series at Wigmore Hall in its 2021/22 Season. This series was born out of a desire to strengthen the strong ties between our countries, which have thrived on the rich texture of cultural connections between us built over centuries.

It is truly wonderful to be able to highlight these links with an inspiring repertoire of European works performed by renowned German artists such as Christian Tetzlaff, Christian Gerhaher, Diana Damrau and the Akademie für alte Musik Berlin at an iconic British institution like Wigmore Hall. Especially after the long break in almost all public life during the pandemic, which has hit the cultural sectors everywhere exceptionally hard.

The partnership between the German Embassy and Wigmore Hall is a celebration of the outstanding musical talents in both our countries. The vibrant artist exchanges between Germany and the United Kingdom will continue to be a vital driving force of our bilateral cultural relations.

I would like to congratulate Artistic Director John Gilhooly and his team for their tireless commitment to featuring artists from Germany in the Wigmore Hall programme. I wish them every success with the 2021/22 musical season.
