    Schoenberg’s Verklärte Nacht arose under the influence of Wagner’s richly chromatic music and absorbed ideas about the human psyche and sexuality current in the Vienna of Sigmund Freud and Arthur Schnitzler.

    The sextet’s surging Romanticism is prefaced with Beethoven’s visionary C minor String Trio, truly a musical treasure of old Vienna, and Brahms’s String Quartet in B flat Op. 67, a work suggestive of summer days, folk music and the contemplation of nature.
