    Overview

‘In him’, the author Mikhail Zoshchenko observedof his friend and fellow poker-player, Shostakovich,‘there are great contradictions’.

The multiplestrands of the composer’s personality surface inhis String Quartet No. 13, an eerie and disturbingsingle-movement work. Its often bleak take on thehuman condition is offset by the Borodin Quartet’schoice of the composer’s lyrical First String Quartetand Beethoven’s all-encompassing Op. 130.
