Overview
Life’s end and intimations of mortality flow throughboth works in the Škampa Quartet’s programme.
Schubert’s ‘Death and the Maiden’ confronts thecomposer’s dark mood and depression following astay in Vienna’s General Hospital in 1824, whileShostakovich’s Third Quartet appears to speak forthe victims of Stalin’s Great Terror and, in its sublimefinal Adagio, presents death as a welcome escapefrom earthly suffering.
