As Wigmore Hall embarks on a major seriesoffering the chance to hear the completesongs of Schubert, Wigmore Study Groupinvites you to immerse yourself with threeafternoons devoted to his Lieder.
Summarisinghis friend’s towering achievement in thissphere Joseph Spaun wrote: ‘Every one ofhis songs is in reality a poem on the poemhe set to music’. Schubert turned to a varietyof poets at different times in his life and forspecific musical purposes, some great, somelesser-known writers and some his ownpersonal friends.
These sessions examinethe complex layers of meaning in his writing, the many stylistic references, the innovativeintegration of voice and piano and the harmoniclanguage which at times anticipates Wagner.
These sessions are hosted by composerJulian Philips with pianist Laura Roberts andcontributing musicologists and musicians. They include live performances by studentsfrom the Guildhall School of Music & Drama.
