    Overview

    Britten’s Third String Quartet, completed just overa year before his death, stands among the twentiethcentury’s greatest chamber works, comparable instature to the finest string quartets of Bartók andShostakovich.

    The Brentano String Quartet, whichrecently succeeded the Tokyo Quartet as Quartet inResidence at Yale School of Music, opens with anothermasterwork, Haydn’s tense and driven Op. 50 No. 4.
