The works in the first half of the
Jerusalem Quartet’sprogramme were written during the 1920s. Janáček’sString Quartet No. 1 was inspired by Tolstoy’s tale ofan extramarital affair, while Bartók’s String QuartetNo. 4 explores what an early critic called ‘the infiniterealm of nature’.
