Overview

Frei, aber einsam – ‘Free, but alone’ – connectswith the abbreviated title of the collaborative F-A-ESonata by Schumann, his pupil Albert Dietrich andthe young Brahms.

Olli Mustonen’s work, a short Invention for solo cello written for Steven Isserlis, is expertly grouped with the flowing melodies of Schumann’s Three Romances and Prokofiev’s Cello Sonata in C, a work often noted for its songlike and expressive qualities.
