Beethoven originally created a fugal finale forthe String Quartet in B flat Op. 130 beforedeveloping it separately as his ‘Great Fugue’.The revised quartet deals in what Vincentd’Indy famously described as ‘open war …between careless merriment and seriousthought’.
It is prefaced here by the intenseconcentration of Op. 95 and the gracefulelegance of Op. 18 No. 2.
