While shades of Mozart fleet over the surface ofBeethoven’s Op. 18 No. 5, the work’s deeporiginality is never in doubt. Its companionpiece, Op. 18 No. 4, inhabits emotional territorycomparable to another contemporary C minormasterwork, the ‘Pathétique’ Sonata.
The TakácsQuartet also mines the infinite possibilities of theString Quartet in A minor Op. 132, completewith its prayer and thanksgiving for the recovery‘by a convalescent’.
