    Shostakovich’s intimate final string quartet,completed in a hospital bed little over a year beforehis death in 1975, addresses the end of life andthe nature of existence in music of profoundreflection and melancholy.

    The Borodin Quartetalso reveals Beethoven’s contemplation of mortalityin his Op. 132, completed in 1825 on recoveryfrom serious illness.
