Alasdair Beatson joins the Doric String Quartet inThomas Adès’s single-movement Piano Quintet,a virtuosic modern take on classical sonata form,and Elgar’s dramatically intense Piano Quintet inA minor. Peter Pears described Britten’s late ThirdString Quartet as being ‘of a profound beauty moretouching than anything else, radiant, wise, new,mysterious – overwhelming’.
