Seven Last Words from the Cross HXX/1B
Overview
Haydn’s orchestral work Seven Last Words from the Cross, commissioned for the Good Friday service in Cadíz, Spain in 1787, creates a sequence of meditative sections based on the seven expressions biblically attributed to Jesus during his crucifixion.
As a preference to each movement, a sacred reading articulated by Sir Thomas Allen will set the tone and add to the poignancy of the Doric String Quartet’s interpretation.
