The Alban Berg EnsembleWien and soprano MagdalenaAnna Hofmann join writer andbroadcaster Gavin Plumley toexplore Arnold Schoenberg’sPierrot Lunaire. This visually andmusically illustrated lecture-recitallooks in depth at the uniquefusion of cabaret, song cycle andchamber music in the composer’s1912 masterpiece. As well asbreadth, Schoenberg achievedmarked concision in these 21settings of Albert Giraud’s poemsabout a sad, sadistic clown. Withthe help of projections and musicalexamples from the stage, thisevent looks beyond the work’snightmarish atmosphere to revealits motifs and methods.
