Vienna 1822: did Beethoven and Rossini meet?
Rossini affirms it and confides it to Wagner, in 1860, later to Hiller as well; from Beethoven, still today, there is no evidence. The meeting allegedly took place through the Italian poet Giuseppe Carpani.
Whatever the case, the real or fictitious encounter is already beside the point and part of a larger narrative: a meeting between two ideas.
