Overview

Marking his fruitful association with the Austrian pianist, for this first programme in his residency Mark Padmore selects some of Schubert’s best-loved songs and a masterly cycle by Schumann, dating from 1840, the miraculous year of song when he produced in all more than 140 titles. In their variety, the 12 texts drawn from the works of the physician-poet Justinus Kerner (1786-1862) prove congenial territory for the composer in their variety, ranging from melancholy, loss and resignation to joy and consolation.
