Overview

Shostakovich suggested that his First Quartet ‘visualized childhood scenes, somewhat naïve and bright moods associated with spring’ while the Second is a wartime work, written at Ivanovo in 1944. The composer gave the Third (1946) a kind of wartime programme: ‘blithe ignorance of the future cataclysm -- rumblings of unrest and anticipation -- forces of war unleashed -- in memory of the dead -- the eternal question: why? and for what?’ The Fourth Quartet (1949) is based on Jewish themes.
