The composer’s later quartets grew longer. He apparently completed the first version of the Ninth in 1961; then, dissatisfied with it, he destroyed it: it was, he said, concerned with ‘themes from childhood,’ whereas the second version (1964) was, he claimed, completely different. Later in the same year he penned his Tenth Quartet, dedicated to his friend and fellow composer Mieczysław Weinberg.
