Overview

One of today’s finest singers collaborates with an equally eminent pianist in a programme of Lieder and Russian song that searches out unusual items as well as the more familiar. Symphonist Anton Bruckner is scarcely known as a composer of song, but tonight’s performers have sought out three early examples. Of his pupil Hans Rott, Bruckner once said, ‘Of this man you will hear great things,’ while on his death at the age of 25 in 1884 Mahler wrote, ‘It is completely impossible to estimate what music has lost in him.’
