Overview

Ligeti’s works are heard in the context of two other highly influential figures. He himself described the music of Conlon Nancarrow (1912-97) as ‘the greatest discovery since Webern and Ives … his music is so utterly original, enjoyable, constructive and at the same time emotional ... for me it's the best music of any composer living today’. For his part, György Kurtág was a lifelong friend of Ligeti and in 1993 gave the eulogy on the occasion of his colleague receiving the Siemens Prize.
