Overview

Recently formed by violinist Michael Foyle, cellist Timothy Hugh and pianist Iain Burnside, the name of the ensemble was initially suggested as a homage to the architect Balthasar Neumann, though eventually accepted when it was pointed out that it was also the name of one of the Three Wise Men. Joan Trimble’s Phantasy Trio dates from 1940, when the Irish composer was working in a London hospital. Frank Bridge’s Second Trio dates from 1928-9 and is one of his responses to the First World War.
