Overview

In the first of a pair of concerts, the ensemble focuses on works by two Italian composers best known for their operas. In Italy, the chrysanthemum is associated with funerals – hence the title of a short piece dedicated to the memory of the Duke of Aosta, written in response to his death in 1890; the composer later recycled some of the material in his 1893 opera Manon Lescaut. Verdi wrote his larger quartet in 1873 to pass the time before a delayed production of Aida.
