Overview

First performed at Good Friday Vespers in 1724 at the St Nicholas Church in Leipzig, the first of Bach’s two extant passion settings is one of the pinnacles of Baroque art, and a work much relished by audiences in the run-up to Easter. The role of the Evangelist is sung by the distinguished Swiss tenor who made his Wigmore debut in 2014.
