Overview

Two works from the Op. 18 set: the A major quartet is modelled on Mozart’s example in the same key (K464). The finale of the B flat piece begins with a slow introduction entitled La Malinconia (Melancholy) before proceeding to an energetic, dance-like movement. The Op. 95 ‘Quartetto serioso’ is one of the composer’s most intense utterances. With an overall heading of The Difficult Decision, the final movement of Beethoven’s last quartet includes the famous question and response written above the notes: ‘Must it be? It must be.’
