The release of the recording by tonight’s artists of Schubert’s greatest achievement in song was received by the critics with exceptional acclaim. The Independent on Sunday described the result as ‘an arrestingly frayed performance that conveys the anguish of Wilhelm Müller’s dislocated protagonist,’ while the critic of Gramophone could not think of one alternative performance ‘that leads more faithfully to the cold comfort at its end. And when we get there, what an end it is!’
