    Overview

Throughout musical history composers have borrowed from their own earlier works, and Bach was no exception. The Sixteen’s programme includes two notable examples: the opening chorus of Cantata No. 40 (Christmas 1723) was recycled as the final ‘Cum sancto spiritu’ of his Mass in G minor (1738), while Cantata No. 72 (Epiphany 1726) supplied the opening chorus of the Mass in F, written for the Dresden Court in 1733.
