From ancient to modern in this programme from the French ensemble founded in 1999 which went on to win major awards at the ARD International Music Competition in 2004 and the Belmont Prize from the Forberg-Schneider Foundation in 2005; in 2009 its Ravel, Fauré and Debussy disc won awards from both BBC Music Magazine and Gramophone. Predating the string quartet era, Purcell’s Fantasias were composed for viol consort, while Ligeti’s 1953-4 work was written under the influence of his fellow Hungarian Bartók.
