Overview
It was his fellow composer and wife Clara who encouraged Robert Schumann to move beyond his specialism as a composer for piano; early fruits included the String Quartets Op. 41 (1842). The self-critical Brahms destroyed more quartets than he published, but the Third (1875) survived – even though its composer described it as ‘a useless trifle’.
