Overview
The hugely admired German pianist makes his farewell appearance with one of his specialities: the Schubert sonatas. Of one release in his complete series of recordings Gramophone wrote that he ‘plays with a savage glint in his eye, bringing Schubert’s restless undercurrents to the surface so that the listener is left limp with a mixture of elation and exhaustion’. The Tchaikovsky suite of 12 pieces (1875) is another substantial work – and one of considerable charm.
