Programme

A programme of traditional Jewish Klezmer Music drawn from the rich folk traditions of Eastern Europe

Overview

The Romantics and their descendants were fascinated by folk culture, and this extended to the traditional Jewish music that they encountered in towns and villages across Central Europe. From Mahler to Prokofiev and beyond, classical musicians have incorporated the sounds of klezmer into their compositions; those sounds are presented here by the musicians of the prize-winning Klezmer ensemble She'Koyokh, who take us back to the world where it was first heard.

She’Koyokh formed in 2001 and has toured all over Europe in venues such as the Concertgebouw in Amsterdam, Fundación Juan March in Madrid, the Gasteig in Munich, Aldburgh’s Snape Proms and London’s Southbank Centre. It has have performed with the BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra and the Aurora Orchestra and been described by the Guardian as 'One of the finest and most entertaining British-based exponents of global music'. She’Koyokh is a Yiddish word meaning 'nice one!'
