Overview

Written in 1923, Janáček’s piece was inspired not only by Tolstoy’s novella but also the composer’s passionate love for the much younger (and married) Kamila Stösslová. The other works – Britten’s three little pieces and the Shostakovich quartet – date from 1933 and 1964 respectively.
