The Armenian-American Sergei Babayan has steadily built up a reputation as a performer with an unusually searching and considered approach to interpretation: the French-Canadian newspaper Le Devoir described him as ‘one of those chosen few: those artists capable of transporting us to their universe, of taking us to a different world’. He joins with another special pianist for a programme of Rachmaninov’s major works for two pianos – the two Suites of 1893 and1901 respectively, plus the composer’s own arrangement of his Symphonic Dances (1941), which he performed at his Californian home with Vladimir Horowitz the following year.
