Since its foundation in 1985 the viol consort has helped generate new interest in a tradition of music formerly little known beyond a small band of specialists, while also regularly seeking out forgotten scores. Here it casts light on Bach’s predecessor, the neglected Johann Sebastiani (1622-83), whose career was spent in Königsberg and whose setting of the St Matthew Passion (written before 1663) is an outstanding achievement.
