Overview

Britten’s Third Quartet was his last work for the medium and indeed one of his final compositions, written in October-November 1975 and dedicated to Hans Keller; the score’s première was given two weeks after the composer’s death. The fifth and final movement makes several references to Britten’s opera Death in Venice and was in fact composed in that city.
