Overview

Composed for the Duke of Alba, Haydn’s Op. 42 may originally have included more than one piece. Tonight’s work – whose manuscript is in the possession of the Biblioteca Musical de la Casa de Navascués (Navarre), which has generously made it available to the Cuarteto Casals – cannot be definitively ascribed to Haydn, but its attribution remains a tantalising possibility.
