Mingus Gold is the work of saxophonist Julius Hemphill (1938-95). Caroline Shaw’s 2011 Entr’acte is structured, she says, ‘like a minuet and trio’, while Colin Jacobsen’s piece ‘started off in my mind as an investigation into and celebration of the incredible creative ferment and experimentation of the 1970s/80s downtown New York scene’.
