The widely admired German ensemble brings familiar 19th-century works alongside a piece by the hugely talented Viktor Ullmann, murdered by the Nazis in Auschwitz-Birkenau in 1944. His Third String Quartet, extraordinarily, was composed in 1943 in another camp – Theresienstadt – one of several pieces he wrote there that have fortunately survived.
