The venue’s own flexible home-team fields altogether four players for this programme of much-loved pieces. Beethoven’s 1797 trio is sometimes called the ‘Gassenhauer’ (‘Gasse’ meaning ‘street’ or ‘alley’) because its third movement’s variations are based on a tune from Joseph Weigl’s L’amor marinaro so popular that it was once sung in every Viennese street!
