Shostakovich’s short Seventh Quartet (1960) was dedicated to the memory of his first wife, Nina Vasilyevna Varzar, who had died six years before; from the same year, its successor is the most popular of the series and its meaning(s) have been much discussed. Weinberg’s works are slightly earlier, dating from 1957 and 1959 respectively.
