Prize-winning Malaysian pianist Julian Chan studied at Wells Cathedral School before taking his place at the Royal Academy of Music, where he is finishing his postgraduate studies. Julian’s first book of original compositions was published at the age of six, and his repertoire choices are often innovative and excitingly questing, focusing on late 19th- and early 20th-century music. For his solo debut at Wigmore Hall, Julian has chosen Java Suite by Leopold Godowsky, a 50-minute 12-movement work inspired by Indonesian culture: gamelan, puppet shadow plays and the natural phenomena of Java. Written in 1925 and rarely performed in its entirety, this is an unmissable opportunity to hear one of Godowsky’s most daring and virtuosic scores.
