The most profound instrumental work from Strauss's late period is Metamorphosen (1945). Some say this dark, brooding work was inspired by the destruction of Munich, while recent research shows that the source was actually Goethe, more specifically his poem Niemand wird sich selberkennen. The young performers from the Royal Academy of Music with violinist Anthony Marwood team it with Schubert’s instantly attractive Octet (1824) – his most substantial single chamber composition.
