Overview
Influenced by Beethoven’s late quartets – little understood at the time – Mendelssohn’s second example (1827) borrows his predecessor’s idea, in Op. 135, of asking and musically answering a verbal question: in Mendelssohn’s case, ‘Ist es wahr?’ (‘Is it true?’) from his song ‘Frage’ Op. 9 No. 1.
