Steven Isserlis flanks two mighty cello sonatas, both written for Mstislav Rostropovich, with the profoundly moving Ballade in A minor by his grandfather, the composer and pianist Julius Isserlis, who escaped Soviet Russia and the Nazis to find refuge in Britain.
