A protégée of the actress Ellen Terry, Elvira Gambogi (who composed and occasionally performed under her full name, Frederica Elvira Gambogi) is best remembered today for a concert in 1892 reviewed by George Bernard Shaw, which led to a correspondence between Terry and Shaw that would last several years. By 1901 she had established herself as a concert singer and had published a number of compositions, some of which, including her song cycle Child-Land, appear in this evening recital.

Amelia Holding was a Scottish soprano who had already had some success performing Gambogi's works in her home country earlier that same year. Wagnerian baritone Thomas Meux would go on to teach at the Royal Academy of Music, where his students included Arthur Fear and Roy Henderson, later teacher to Kathleen Ferrier.
