Born in Copenhagen, the Danish soprano Anna Steinhauer studied with Isidor Dannström, one of whose popular folk-dance inspired Polskas she sang at this Wigmore Hall debut recital. In 1893 she married the British organist and composer Albert Mallinson, and around the turn of the century the pair began giving regular concerts dedicated in part or entirely to his compositions.

This was the first of several such concerts they would give at Wigmore Hall, and featured a selection of Mallinson's works (including his song cycle My Garden), as well as rarities from the Scandinavian composers Peter Heise and Fritz Arlberg.
