  • Arta Smetana voice* *Wigmore Hall Debut

A solo vocal recital of a length and scope such as this, the first and only appearance at Wigmore Hall by Arta Smetana, was in 1901 a rare undertaking – most singers chose to share the stage with a violinist or pianist, or to give a joint concert with another vocalist with whom they could end the programme performing a few duets.

Although ambitious, featuring among other things Elisabeth’s aria Dich, teure Halle from Wagner’s Tannhäuser and the first hearing at Wigmore Hall of Schubert's atmospheric Der Tod und das Mädchen, the concert was not a success. A critic in The Times praised the singer's intentions, but concluded that her voice and interpretation were unequal to such a daunting task – of the programme, they said ‘there are not six singers living who could hope to do justice to it’.
