Works for piano duet or piano duo can be rewarding for listeners as well as such players as today’s husband-and-wife team. Originally written for organ, Mozart’s 1791 Fantasia was transcribed by him for piano duet, while it was Debussy who made the two-piano version of Schumann’s 1845 Canonic Studies, originally for organ or pedal piano. Satie’s Pear-Shaped Pieces were conceived for piano duet in 1903, while Chabrier’s Romantic Waltzes for two pianos date from 1883.
