The first of myriad pupils' concerts to be held at Wigmore Hall was a showcase of female singers studying with the French mezzo-soprano Blanche Marchesi.

The daughter of Mathilde Marchesi, herself a singer and voice teacher whose students included Nellie Melba and Selma Kurz, Blanche Marchesi was born in Paris in 1863 and made her performing debut in 1896. Although she continued to appear in recitals throughout her life, she was also a successful teacher, with pupils including Astra Desmond and Clara Clemens, daughter of the American author Mark Twain.

This afternoon concert featured works by Horatio Parker and Henning von Koss as well as more familiar arias by Mozart and Haydn, the latter performed by Ethel Henry Bird (daughter of Henry R. Bird, one of the accompanists for this concert) who would go on to teach at Trinity College of Music where her students included Edith Coates.
