The Curtius Concert Club was founded by impresario and concert director Alfred Schulz-Curtius, who arranged concerts under its auspices at the Victorian St. James's Hall and the Prince's Galleries in Piccadilly. The newly-built Wigmore Hall provided another potential venue, and the Club's concerts ran here throughout 1901, 1904 and 1905.

The first of these concerts was given by the Italian singer Camilla Landi, already a success on the continent, and the violinist Kálmán Rónay, nephew of the influential Hungarian teacher, composer and violinist Leopold Auer.

Accompanist Henry R. Bird was a fixture on the London concert scene at the time and would go on to accompany an array of vocal and chamber performers at Wigmore Hall between 1901 and 1914.
